World book day – Narnia style.

This world book day was based all on the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Children came dressed up in everything from Aslan to knights to Lucy. We started the day tea staining paper to make an ancient map. After this, we created our own kingdom on the map, complete with mountains, lakes and islands. We then mapped out instructions on the maps focusing on using our fronted adverbials, to find Aslan who had been captured!

The sweet sounds of pentatonic scales.

In music we have been looking at pentatonic scales. These are scales with 5 notes in which miss out the 4th and 7th notes of a normal scale. Today we were working with CDEG and A and different children got to conduct our class chime bar band, experimenting with different rhythms and notes!

Arts fortnight finale!

Wow what a day to remember! I am so proud of the children in 4C and their performances of the dance and the drama were amazing. Special shout out to Mrs Johnston and Miss Patchett for helping us express ourselves through our art and dance. We were looking at the theme of identity as part of our ‘free to be me’ topic and had great discussions about our own identities and how we can be ourselves in the world. I can’t believe how much we have done in two weeks from printing to shouting our lines across each other on the field to practise our drama to learning a complicated dance routine very quickly. Here are a selection of photos that capture the past two weeks.

All things electricity

In Year 4 we have been learning about electricity. We started off by looking at why, when we all hold hands, an electric current can run right through us and light up an electric stick! We have explored why we need a full circuit for the light to go on and also looked at making electrical circuits that don’t work and why not. We then had a go at making our own circuits and found it very exciting when the motors/ light worked.

4C’s Christmas bonanza!

Today we have had such a Christmas extravaganza. We started off the day finishing off our spooky winter tales in writing, followed by making our Christingles and exploring what they are ready for the Christingle service tomorrow. After lunch we did some Christmas reading then came the part everyone was excited for… the party!

We played lots of party games, put the disco light on and even did the conga around the classroom! Which party games can you remember from the pictures?

Roman mosaics

Today we spend the morning exploring Roman mosaics and making our own. We had red, orange, yellow and gold pieces of tiles. We looked like minions with our goggles on keeping our eyes safe and cut the tiles into smaller pieces using tile cutters. The children made their mosaics into hearts which will have grout added to them and they will form part of a memory wall to remember people we have lost during covid.

All things sound with Sam

Wow what a morning we have had in 4C learning about all things sound. Sam the sound expert came in and taught us all about how sound is made, why some sound are different than others and even how to make our own instruments out of everyday items! All of the children got to try out one of the sound-makers which included: blowing into tubes to hear pitch, listening for the air vibrating in a suitcase and even hitting large tubes with flip flops.

Can you remember how Sam said you could make a tiny recorder from a plastic straw? Here is a picture to help jog your memory.

Learning about seasonal food by making pizzas

We had a very exciting Monday this week. The day started off learning about food miles and eating seasonal foods in our PSHE lesson. We tracked how far an avocado from Mexico would have to fly to get to Leeds. You can do this at home too using https://www.foodmiles.com/ .We then discussed winter vegetables and the children were mostly horrified to find out we were putting parsnips, onions, kale and butternut squash on our pizzas!

We peeled and cut our veggies and found some were easier to peel than others (butternut squash!) then roasted them. We then made our dough and got our hands very messy kneading it and learning about yeast. After the dough had risen we assembled our pizzas and were surprised that we actually enjoyed the vegetables ontop. The cafe smelled amazing and Miss Cuthill was very impressed with 4C’s tidying up!

Roman shields

In our DT lessons we have been designing, cutting, sticking and painting our Roman shields. 4C’s shields were in the style of Roman shields rather than Celtic ones so there was no blue in sight!

Our final designs incorporated the classic arrows and mainly red design of the Roman shields but we also put our own personal twist on it, using string and pieces of cardboard to make our designs 3D.
